Home-Loving Hobbits
By Megan Goodacre

Quick post today, but not really about knitting. Many knitting projects to share, but can't yet, too many secrets, shhhhh...
So I thought I'd tackle the name "Tricksy Knitter". Why "tricksy" I'm often asked? Actually, that's not true. I'm rarely asked. I usually get a bemused look and then I watch as the person writes down t-r-i-x-i-e-k-n-i-t-t-e-r. Maybe I should buy that domain too.
"Tricksy" is lifted from the scene from Tolkien's The Hobbit, [spoiler alert in case you've never heard the story, but surely that's not possible?] where Bilbo outsmarts Gollum and escapes with his life and Gollum's precious ring. Bilbo wins the battle of wits by being clever, but mostly by luck.
I relate to Bilbo; he is a home-loving hobbit, who enjoys the comforts of a warm dry burrow, good food and drink, and nice things. But he's got a tiny, if unwilling, spirit of adventure in him.
I confess, I also relate to Gollum; my precioussss...
P.S. Do you adore Martin Freeman? (Sorry Charles). In Sherlock and especially as Arthur Dent in Hitchhiker's Guide. I've always thought he would be perfect as Jim Dixon in Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim.
